Less is More, The New Bond

Daniel Craig as James BondThe longstanding adventures of 007 are a staple in the movie industry and each new movie has taken the story and gadgetry to all new ridiculous heights. Makers of the latest installment of the James Bond franchaise are betting on a new actor, and a lot less eye candy.

Many actors have portrayed the smoothtalking spy James Bond over the past 44 years. Ever since Sean Connery portrayed the gentleman hero in “Dr. No” in 1962, the premise has been the same. James Bond (007) was the smooth, debonair secret agent on a mission to stop evildoers from their plans of world domination. Of course, no battle for control of the world would be complete without fantastic gadgets, lots of explosions, and a plethora of beautiful scantily-clad women.

“Casino Royale” starring English actor Daniel Craig, will debut later this year. It will be the 21’st film in the franchaise that has grossed almost 4 billion dollars to date. Filmmakers behind this latest installment look to curb the outlandish trend that Bond movies have been following as of late, and return to the roots. What can you expect from this new, stripped down Bond?

Daniel Craig as James BondForget impossible gadgets like invisible cars and CGI effects that would give George Lucas wet dreams. The new Bond will be a flawed, gritty character trying to come to copes with the violence that is now becoming part of his life. “Casino Royale” returns the beginning of Bond creator Ian Fleming’s saga, when Bond carried out his first two assassinations and first earns his “License to Kill.”

Filmmakers promise more grit and reality and less gimmicks as Bond struggles through his duties and slowly becomes the Bond we all know today. It’s a bold new direction to take the tired franchaise, but I believe it is exactly what is needed. Box office returns have not been spectacular for the last several installments of James Bond despite it being one of the most famous names in movie culture. People are tired of seeing a bunch of eye candy and are ready for some real storytelling. I know I am. Can the new James Bond pull it off? Only Time Will Tell.
