Born shortly before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Addwaitya, a giant Aldabra tortoise, felt it was time to move on to that big tortoise shell in the sky. He spent several years in his sprawling estate before he was brought to the zoo in 1875. Addwaitya’s early life showed that British sailors had brought him from the Seychelles islands. Tortoises are believed to be the longest living of all animals, with life spans often surpassing 100 years.
